The Teranga Lions lost the win in the dying minutes
Senegal’s national team bid farewell to the 2026 World Cup in dramatic fashion, losing to Belgium (3-2) in extra time in the round of 32 at the Seattle Stadium in the United States of America on Wednesday evening.
The Lions of Teranga became the first team in the history of the World Cup to progress to the knockout stages, leading by two goals until the 85th minute in one of the most exciting matches of the tournament.

Senegal continued their struggles against European teams at the World Cup as they suffered their fifth consecutive defeat against the Old Continent, conceding 3 goals in each of their last 4 encounters.

According to the French network “stats foot”, in total, African teams have managed just 4 wins in 18 matches against European teams in the knockout stages of the World Cup – 3 wins for Morocco and one win for Senegal.
The match ended with the victory of the Senegalese, but the Belgian team suddenly stood up, scoring two consecutive goals in the 86th and 89th minutes by Romelu Lukaku and Youri Tillmans, making the score 2-2.
The encounter was extended to extra time which saw the Red Devils win a decisive victory thanks to Yuri Tillmans’ own penalty in the 120th minute + 5.
With this victory, the Belgian team set the date for the 1/8 finals of the World Championship with the winner of the match between the USA and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
