US home battery installation has soared in response to rising electricity prices

US homeowners are embracing home batteries in numbers that are expected to drop as early as 2026, boosted by government incentives as they seek to curb the rising cost of residential electricity. These developments could also open up renewable energy for power grid users and AI data.

New home battery installations reached 673 megawatts of energy storage in the first quarter of 2026, according to the US Energy Information Administration. This was driven by countries with high electricity prices that have implemented policies to encourage the installation of home batteries, Bloomberg News report.

These home batteries are seen as the next natural step for countries that have already supported the adoption of rooftop solar among homeowners, based on how the batteries help homeowners use solar energy at night. California and Hawaii are home to the most new batteries, while Texas and Arizona also saw the most installations.

California encourages homeowners with solar panels to install batteries by offering better rates for residential electricity sent to the grid when the sun goes down, Bloomberg reported. Hawaii offers a one-time payment of $400 for each kilowatt of battery storage that homeowners install.

However, the shutdown of the failed home battery system coincided with a gradual decline in the number of fixed solar panels — thanks to the Trump administration and driven by Republicans. One Very Beautiful Bill after removing the 30 percent federal solar tax credit for homeowners. However, US electricity generation from solar power continues to rise and even than coal-fired generation in April.

The battery installation is also related to the rising cost of electricity for US customers. Energy Information Administration more recent information shows that on average worldwide the cost of residential electricity has increased by 7 percent in April 2026 compared to the cost of electricity in April 2025. Therefore, homeowners with home battery management systems can benefit from saving energy when electricity prices are at their lowest and draining it at times of greatest need.
