Can the Sudanese Rapid Support Forces take control of El-Obeid? | | Sudan war

For several weeks, the Sudanese military town of El-Obeid has been under intense attack by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

These are some of the worst since the conflict began in 2023.

Many experts say that if the RSF captures the city, it will strengthen its influence in western Sudan. It is currently under the control of the Sudanese military, who are trying to stop the advance of the RSF.

But as the battle for the city rages on, hundreds of thousands of civilians are paying the price. Aid groups are warning of the risk of mass atrocities and humanitarian disaster, as people caught in the war cannot escape.

But why is the battle for control of the city so important?
