Writer E Jean Carroll has asked a judge to pay Donald Trump $5m (£3.7m) in damages awarded by a jury three years ago in a civil suit against the president for sexual assault and defamation.
The question comes a day later. US Supreme Court Trump declined a request to review the case.
In May 2023, a New York jury awarded Carol damages after alleging that Trump sexually assaulted her in the 1990s and falsely accused her on social media. Trump has denied the allegations.
Carroll’s lawyers said the secretary agreed to all of Trump’s requests to delay paying the damages, which now total about $5.8 million with interest.
“Given the extraordinary lengths he has taken to avoid such payments and the complete rejection of every effort, this partnership ends today,” the attorneys wrote. “It’s time to pay Carol.”
The BBC has contacted Trump’s lawyers for comment.
Carroll’s attorneys said Trump had again tried to delay paying the damages by asking the Supreme Court to reconsider the appeal.
“After four years of litigation at every level of the federal court system, it is time for this case to end,” Carroll’s attorneys said in a legal brief.
Carroll, a former magazine columnist, accused Trump of assaulting her in the dressing room of a Bergdorf Goodman department store in Manhattan in the mid-1990s, and later denied the allegations in 2022 and defamed her on Truth Social.
Judge Lewis Kaplan, who presided over the president’s civil trial, repeatedly said jurors improperly allowed evidence that could affect how they view Trump.
A federal appeals court agreed with the jury’s verdict last year, saying Kaplan did not commit errors that warrant a new trial.
After the Supreme Court decision on Monday, Trump reiterated that Carroll’s allegations were false on Truth Social.
Ironically, the Supreme Court refuses to ‘review’ a false case against me,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social. He also said he would continue to fight against “my power and strength” ridiculous defamation lawsuits, including “weapon and law enforcement issues.”
Carroll’s attorneys included the post in their new filings on Tuesday.
Trump in 2016 In 2024, the president appealed another jury decision that defamed Carroll and awarded him nearly $84 million. A panel of federal judges rejected an appeal of that decision last year.
