Jack Quickends The character, Richie, leads a storyline that explores conversations around male role models and boys’ mental health. His co-star is Ella Plays Charlie, who is influenced by his behavior.
“The show has always tackled serious and relevant issues off the pitch,” Jack told BBC Sport. “Through this story, we examine the modern pressures boys face and the exploitative nature of some online communities.
“We see that kind of behavior from Richie, who as captain of the Hawks first team, is a role model for some of the club’s younger players.
“Richie is so fake. He smiles for the cameras but, when they’re not on, he’s actually a very manipulative and narcissistic, horrible man. He affects Ella’s character, Charlie, as he affects some of the boys who are his teammates.
“They start looking at girls as if they’re not worthy, because that’s Richie’s agenda – to make boys think they’re better, and girls don’t belong in football.
“It’s important to reflect that this kind of thing is happening in real life, but what’s important is how the other characters react when they realize what Richie is going through and how they deal with it together.”
Jamie Johnson’s four series featured cameo appearances by Sam Allardyce, Ollie Watkins and Mary Earps. It starts on Wednesday, May 6 on CBBC and BBC iPlayer and new episodes will be released every Wednesday
