Dan Evans bid an emotional farewell to Wimbledon as his career ended after losing his men’s doubles match to Britain’s Henry Searle.
The 36-year-old announced his retirement after the championships in June, but has not played in singles since he was outplayed in the singles tournament and lost in qualifying.
Evans was left in tears as he signed autographs to watch his and Searle’s 6-2 6-4 first-round loss to ninth seeds Hugo Nice and Edouard Roger-Vasselin on Court 15.
The 20-year-old’s 20-year career was an understated end to the 2015 Davis Cup team that secured Great Britain’s first title in 79 years.
Evans also won two ATP Tour-level titles and reached the third round of Wimbledon three times in singles.
“It’s just a feeling, isn’t it? You think about your family and all the sacrifices we’ve made,” Evans told BBC Sport.
“I grew up watching this tournament. I remember coming home from school and watching Wimbledon, and I was one of the few who finally got to play here.
“It was all worth it. If he thought twice about putting in the effort, I can tell you it was worth it.
“I enjoyed every minute I played on these courts.”
