Young Spanish star Lamine Yamal has shut the door early on the possibility of equaling or surpassing one of the most historic World Cup records held by Portuguese legend Cristiano Ronaldo after he confirmed he does not envision himself making it to six rounds of the tournament.
Yamal’s comments came just days after Ronaldo’s historic achievement, after he became the first player in football history to score in six different World Cups.
Although Yamal, due to his young age, was widely seen as one of the future favorites to equal or even break this achievement, the Spaniard seemed very realistic about his long future on the pitch.
Yamal said in statements viewed by renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano through his account on Platform X. “I can’t see myself playing in 6 editions of the World Cup or playing at all until I’m in my forties.”
Ronaldo made history at the 2026 World Cup after scoring against Uzbekistan to become the first player to score in 6 different World Cups.
It is noteworthy that the Argentinian legend Lionel Messi also participated in 6 matches, but he did not manage to score a goal in the 2010 tournament held in AAU.
