A family whose three-year-old boy was critically injured after falling into a crocodile enclosure has thanked zoo staff for saving their son.
The BBC understands that the boy was attacked by at least one crocodile following the incident on June 18 at Johnsons of Oldhurst in Cambridgeshire.
In a statement issued by Cambridgeshire Police, the family said: “We would like to thank the zoo staff who rescued our son from captivity… Our focus remains on his recovery and supporting him through this extremely challenging and long period.”
Police have arrested a 30-year-old man suspected of attempted murder and granted bail.
Police said the boy remained in a stable condition at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge.
The family’s statement added, “We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of public support and well wishes, as well as to everyone directly involved in our son’s care and hospital recovery.”
The boy, who was visiting the zoo with his family from Cambridgeshire, was seriously injured “while in the enclosure” and was taken away by zoo staff, police said.
A spokesman for the force said: “A fundraising page has been set up to support the child’s recovery and recovery, as well as provide financial stability while the family is in hospital and in the coming months.”
Police said the family wishes to remain anonymous.
Based at Old Hurst Farm near Huntingdon, the zoo has more than 100 animals, including lions, tigers and meerkats.
