LeBron James: Which teams will challenge the Golden State Warriors to sign the NBA superstar after leaving the Los Angeles Lakers

LeBron James may be 41 years old and in the twilight of his historic NBA career, but his decision to leave the Los Angeles Lakers and his impending choice of a new team continues to be the biggest sports story of the summer.

After eight years with the Lakers, which led to an NBA title in 2020, James has decided he wants a ‘last dance’ elsewhere, and his status as a free agent means he can go to whichever team he chooses for the salary he chooses.

Given how settled James and his family seemed to be in Los Angeles, with his son Bronny playing with him for the Lakers through 2024, most assumed he would be content to see out his career in purple and gold.

Within hours of his Lakers departure being confirmed, James’ camp had already leaked to US media that his priority was a realistic chance to compete for a fifth NBA title.

While the coming days aren’t expected to rival James’ 2010 free agency frenzy, when his infamous TV special ‘The Decision’ saw him leave the Cleveland Cavaliers for the Miami Heat, this latest race for his signature will dominate US sports media.

With Stephen Curry’s Golden State Warriors emerging as the first choice team to sign James, Sky Sports Evaluates his best and most realistic options.

Golden State Warriors

Even before James’ departure to the Lakers was confirmed, rumors began that the Warriors were making a play to sign him.

It also declined an option on their own four-time NBA champion and All-Star Draymond Green’s contract for next season, allowing the team the flexibility to sign James and potentially trade for another star.

James was only willing to go to Golden State if they pulled off a trade with the Washington Wizards for his former Lakers teammate Anthony Davis, but that could be a challenging deal for the Warriors.

Davis or not, the chance to play with Curry, the game’s greatest shooter of all time and the most recognizable face of the past decade and alongside James, would have huge appeal.

Their partnership — along with many other stars — on the 2024 U.S. Olympic-winning squad has created untold excitement, and a pair at this stage in their careers would make almost every Warriors game feel like an All-Star contest.

The question here is whether James believes they will really have enough to win a championship, with the 38-year-old Curry in the twilight of his career and struggling to stay healthy in recent years.

Whether it’s Davis or someone else, the Warriors may need to make a trade for another significant piece to convince James that he can win another title with them.

Cleveland Cavaliers

The first of two return options available to James is a third stint with his hometown team.

After spending the first seven years of his NBA career after being drafted by the Cavs in 2003, James returned in 2014 and finally went on to lead Cleveland to a title in 2016.

Not for the first time, he left the Cavaliers to join the Lakers on good terms, and there’s no obvious reason why he couldn’t return.

The Cavaliers have built a strong roster, finishing in the top four of the Eastern Conference in the regular season each of the last four years, but haven’t been able to get over the hump and reach the NBA Finals.

They gave their best effort earlier this year, reaching the Eastern Conference Finals, but a 4-0 loss to the eventual champion New York Knicks left them feeling far away.

Adding James to a roster featuring Donovan Mitchell, James Harden and young star center Evan Mobley will certainly boost their chances of contending.

However, it seems that this is a move motivated by emotion and the chance to end his career where it began, rather than the belief that it will be his best chance at a title.

San Antonio Spurs

It’s highly unlikely that James will want to join the newly-crowned champion Knicks, joining the theoretically best team in the league and facing criticism for ‘ring chasing’, his most certain path to title contention would be to join the beaten finalists, the San Antonio Spurs.

The Spurs possess some of the league’s youngest talent, led by 22-year-old Frenchman Victor Wembanyama, the most talked-about prospect since James entered the league more than 20 years ago.

Wembanyama has already lived up to the hype by leading his team to its first ever playoff appearance in the NBA Finals, and he is flanked by some other notable young talent in the form of Stephon Cassel and Dylan Harper.

What they lacked most in the NBA Finals was the experience and composure to manage games, several of which they gave away significant leads.

As a basketball savant, James would be a perfect fit for a team that has built a reputation over the past 30 years for playing the game the right way.

The continued prominence in the organization of former Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich, who maintains a strong relationship with James after coaching him to Olympic glory with Team USA, may be a contributing factor.

Miami Heat

The other option for James to return to one of his former teams would come from the Miami Heat, with whom he won back-to-back titles in 2012 and 2013.

Perhaps the biggest obstacle to this move is that James’ relationship with Heat team president Pat Riley soured toward the end of his time in Miami, and has never truly been repaired.

However, few expected James to return to Cleveland after he had been victimized since his first exit in and out of the Cavaliers organization, so nothing is impossible!

In terms of basketball, the Heat just made a huge trade for two-time NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, pairing the Greek Freak with James’ USA teammate Bam Adebayo.

The pair are two of the best defensive players in the league, and will give James the luxury — which he probably needs at this point in his career — of being able to focus most of his attention on offense.

The trio’s combination of size and strength will be unmatched, and will undoubtedly make for an interesting basketball test.

Perhaps the biggest ace in the Heat’s deck is the continued presence of head coach Erik Spoelstra, the league’s longest-serving active boss, who brought James to his title with the team more than a decade ago.

The pair are understood to have maintained a strong relationship, and Spoelstra will likely be key to convincing James to return to Miami.

Minnesota Timberwolves

Minnesota isn’t the flashiest NBA position, but James’ basketball fit with the Timberwolves would undoubtedly be one of the most exciting in the league.

The Timberwolves just made a big trade, bringing in guard LaMelo Ball along with Anthony Edwards — the league’s hottest young American player.

Along with two star guards, the Timberwolves have one of the league’s best wings in Jaden McDaniels and a top center in Rudy Gobert, with plenty of depth around them.

James could theoretically slot right into the starting five in what would instantly become the league’s most watchable team.

Key to the Timberwolves’ pursuit will be the charisma of 24-year-old Edwards, who was James’ teammate on the U.S. gold medal team at the last Olympics.
