To have the essence of ‘magic’, one must have the ability to take one out of his everyday life, out of the ordinary and into the extraordinary.
It will have remnants of what they know, they will recognize parts of it, but then there will be something extra sprinkled in – a shimmer that might not normally be there from week to week.
Super League Magic aims to do just that when it comes to weekend shows.
Will there be a rugby league match? yes Will there still be big runs, big tackles and gravity-defying finishes? of course
But, with 12 of the Super League’s 14 teams taking to a ground known for football drama – Everton’s new home, the Hill Dickinson Stadium – they will proudly and proudly announce that all eyes can turn to the Super League this weekend.
The magic is on Merseyside.
The purpose of the Magic Weekend is to take rugby league to cities where the game might not normally be seen Newcastle became home to many of the event’s successful stages, with Anfield, the Etihad Stadium, Cardiff’s Principality and more hosting the two-day bonanza.
This marks the second time that Liverpool has hosted the event but this time the blue part of the city will help put on the show instead of the red.
“Magic allows you to show your love and your pride for rugby league by being a rugby league supporter,” said Sky Sports Rugby League Brian Carney.
“Las Vegas has done much the same in the sense that it’s an annual event that a rugby league fan, who they support, can go there and feel part of a huge event.
“Over the past 20 years we haven’t gotten everything right about Magic Weekend but it looks like this year will be very different.
“I’m looking forward to a sold-out Hill Dickinson, with passionate rugby league fans, showing the locals what it’s all about.
This stadium is not new to rugby league. It hosted England’s second Test against Australia during the historic Ashes series last autumn.
Its layout is suitable for Super League. As a sport with high crowds and a partisan fanbase, the closeness of the crowd on the field creates an intense atmosphere, with players feeling the vibrations of the roar around them.
They will experience it as many historic rivalries use its platform to elevate the game once again.
Wigan Warriors will face St Helens in another magical version of an old derby, Leeds Rhinos and Bradford Bulls will renew their early anarchic rivalry, Hull KR and Hull FC will once again split east and west.
These are derbies, rivalries, enemies, that go beyond the reach of rugby league and it will show them why these battles born of proximity, families divided, lines drawn, deserve the attention they attract.
Wigan and Saints are a rivalry rooted in animosity that sees two of Super League’s most successful teams – separated by just eight miles and a big hill – go head-to-head. And this time they have a point to prove.
Following his side’s Challenge Cup semi-final rout of Saints, Wigan head coach Matt Peat questioned St Helens’ “identity”.
St Helens will be looking to show that the identity is still very much intact by palming their arch-rivals on the big stage with young players.
Leeds Rhinos’ resurgence under Brad Arthur has been visible and so far they look like the team to beat. In the early 2000s, it was ‘Bullmania’ that they had to stop for success. Now, they want to own them. Jack Connor will want them to own a field where he was denied the chance to represent his country despite being named the Man of Steel.
Hull are licking their wounds after a bruising defeat to KR Rhinos but have been better than the black and whites in recent years. They will need it again to keep their fans content as they look to cement themselves in the top six.
Wakefield is in the top six and doesn’t want to slow down. To hopefully put themselves on the path to “something special,” as their head coach Daryl Powell would say, they’ll need to get past the team Powell once led to a Grand Final.
Magic is on Merseyside and with a storyline with many twists and turns, record ticket sales and examples of artists and Jax Jones set to take the show to another level, the stage is very much set.
The Super League now just has to pull the rabbit out of the hat.
Sky Sports Every game in the Super League this season will be shown live, with two matches in each round exclusively live. The remaining five matches will be broadcast Sky Sports+
