England coach Thomas Tuchel has revealed that his team will follow his predecessor Sir Gareth Southgate’s style of free kicks in the World Cup.
Tuchel’s team will face D.R. in the tournament’s first playoff game on Wednesday.
The match, which kicks off at 17:00 BST in Atlanta, will be available live on BBC One and iPlayer.
In the year Prior to Southgate’s appointment as manager in 2016, the national team had a poor record in major competitions – winning just one of seven.
But under Southgate, England have taken their penalty shootout to new heights, securing three of their four wins between 2018 and 2024.
“The FA[Football Association]has a program that has been in place for years and we follow that program,” Tuchel said.
“We are prepared. We have a process, the players have a process.”
Despite the plan, Tuchel added a note of caution.
“I think it’s difficult to simulate the situation[of the shooting],” he said.
“I heard Thierry Henry say that he can’t remember the walk from the halfway line to the penalty spot when he took his first free-kick for France – you can’t coach that.”
Asked if the players would be given the option of taking a penalty, Tuchel replied: “We know who takes them, we know the order, but we don’t know who finished the game.”
