The Supreme Court of the United States has dealt heavy defeats to Trump while expanding its powers

In each of these cases, Trump and his team have pushed the boundaries of the president’s authority, often incorporating novel or rarely used legal theories to support their actions.

Most legal scholars consider Trump’s birthright repeal to be the clearest language in the U.S. Constitution after more than 125 years of Supreme Court rulings.

His tariffs, which were imposed and repealed by presidential decree, conflict with recent Supreme Court rulings that state that major new policies must be cleared by Congress.

Trump’s attempt to deploy the National Guard is a rare example of a president attempting to do so over opposition from local and state officials. It was overturned by the court, which weighed in to uphold the lower court’s ruling.

Beneath these impressive issues, however, was a long list of decisions that benefited Trump’s more incremental — but tangible — expansion of power and his conservatives.

“There will be occasional differences, but I think this is the strongest and most conservative court we’ve ever seen with the broadest concept of presidential power,” said Kate Shaw, a law professor at the University of Pennsylvania.

On Monday, the court’s six conservatives ruled that Trump could fire members of federal agencies he established to be “neutral” based on policy disagreements.

Although in a separate opinion, the court made an exception for members of the powerful Federal Reserve, which sets U.S. monetary policy, the decision gives Trump — and future presidents — more power over broad areas of the federal bureaucracy.
