Silence owns the scene
Portugal’s national team recently experienced sad hours after tragedy struck one of its members ahead of their upcoming match against Croatia in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32.
The Portuguese team did not escape harsh criticism directed at most of its stars led by legend Cristiano Ronaldo, drawing twice against the Democratic Republic of Congo and Colombia and winning once against Uzbekistan in the group stage.
Amidst these controversies and attempts to unite the team, former Chelsea star Ricardo Carvalho, assistant coach, received news of his father’s death.
He said Mirror newspaper “The death of Portugal assistant coach Ricardo Carvalho’s father led to emotional scenes at the team’s Miami camp, with Cristiano Ronaldo among the mourners.”
The Portuguese Football Federation said that former Chelsea defender Carvalho has received news of the death of his father Manuel Ribeiro de Carvalho (69) at the team’s base in Miami and will return to his homeland to attend the funeral.
Carvalho attended the training session on Monday, where the players of the Portuguese national team observed a moment of silence in memory of his father.
Mirror commented: “In a solemn scene, the team formed a circle, clasped hands and silently bowed their heads in respect to Carvalho. Ronaldo embraced his former teammate, who won 89 international caps between 2003 and 2016, in addition to a number of his other teammates.
The Portuguese Football Federation expresses its deep regret over the death of Manuel Ribeiro de Carvalho, the father of the assistant coach of the national team, Ricardo Carvalho, at the age of 69. I wish them grief and strength to face this irreparable loss.”
The Portuguese team wrote on social networks. “We are with you, strength, Ricardo Carvalho,” along with two photos of the condolence team.
Ahead of the press conference to review the Round of 32 match against Croatia with Joao Felix, the national team adviser again referred to the death of Carvalho’s father.
Francisco Trejo de Abreu said: “I just want to express my condolences to Ricardo Carvalho, whose father died. He is still with us. We wanted to express our condolences because he was a great colleague and a great friend.”
After that press conference, the Portuguese Football Federation announced that Carvalho would travel to Portugal to attend his father’s funeral. Preparations for the Portuguese national team continue before the knockout stage match with Croatia.
Carvalho (aged 48) has been in coach Roberto Martinez’s staff since 2023, after previously being on Portuguese coach Andre Villas-Boas’ staff at Marseille.
