A man has been found dead in an out-of-control wildfire in northern Greece, forcing residents of a nearby village to evacuate.
The man’s body was found in a charred area near Lithi, 15 km (nine miles) northwest of the city of Thessaloniki, where more than 100 firefighters were working to control the blaze.
A woman was burned on her hands while trying to put out the fire, the heat and wind hindered the efforts to put out the fire, and a woman was injured.
Dozens of fire engines and at least seven aircraft were involved in the massive operation to bring the blaze under control late Tuesday.
The cause of the fire, which broke out around 14:30 (11:30 GMT) and quickly spread to a nearby forest, is still unknown.
The region was under a severe wildfire warning on Tuesday, with dry conditions and high winds making the blaze difficult to control and causing frequent flare-ups.
Residents of Lyti were urged to evacuate their homes, Greek broadcaster EART reported that the fire had damaged a small number of properties and was spreading to the nearby village of Melisochori by Tuesday evening.
It is the latest forest fire in recent days as Greece reaches its peak tourist season. Wildfires have become a common occurrence during the country’s ongoing drought and hot summers.
