Frank Gardner: Highlights from the Defensive Investment Plan

The government has increased defense spending from £54bn a year when it takes office in 2024 to £80bn in 2029 – a 27% increase in real terms.

In the year Ministers said it was the biggest increase since the Cold War in the 1980s.

Since John Haley quit as defense secretary on June 11, citing insufficient funding in the scheme, his successor, Dan Jarvis, has received an extra £1.5bn.

But this would bring the total additional funding to the Ministry of Defense to £15bn, with the gap between what is required and what is being funded said to be £28bn.
