German Federation. We will not ignore a major setback as if nothing happened

Paraguay’s early slap has fueled anger towards Nagelsmann

The president of the German Football Association, Bernd Neuendorff, said that he and the sports management of the federation will hold a new meeting with the coach of the German national team, Julian Nagelsmann, to discuss the sudden withdrawal from the 2026 World Cup.

“After the bitter defeat to Paraguay and our bye to the World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico, I sat down with coach Julian Nagelsmann yesterday for a long discussion.”

He continued. “The sports management team led by Andreas Rettig and Rudi Voller were also present. We all agree that our performance at the World Cup was below our expectations.”

He added: “In the coming days, we will calmly and carefully examine the reasons that prevented the team from reaching its potential and not fulfilling its own ambitions and the aspirations of German football.”

He continued. “In light of this major setback and the challenges ahead, we cannot and will not be content to move forward as if nothing happened. We would like to thank all the fans who supported us so well in the US and Canada as well as at home.

Before the start of the World Cup, the pressure on Nagelsmann’s shoulders was increasing. A 7-1 win over Curaçao briefly eased that pressure before two unconvincing matches against Ivory Coast (2-1 win) and Ecuador (2-1 loss).

But a stunning round of 32 defeat on penalties against a relatively inexperienced Paraguay side deepened public doubts about the 38-year-old.
