West Indies 125-7 (20 overs): Matthews 30 (28); Gardner 2-13
Australia 127-2 (13 overs): Mooney 61* (36), Gardner 35* (20)
Australia won by eight wickets
All-rounder Ellis Perry gave Australia an injury scare ahead of the T20 World Cup final by retiring injured during his side’s dominant semi-final win over the West Indies at The Oval.
Perry, a legend of the women’s game who has been in great form this tournament, unexpectedly departed with two runs off seven balls in Australia’s successful chase of 126 runs.
The 35-year-old did not appear in the capped and there were no clear infractions when he left the field, but any problems are clear concerns for Sunday’s meeting with England or South Africa.
Australia pulled off the most routine of wins as they continued their flawless run through the tournament.
After restricting the West Indies to 125-7, they were 64-2 at the end of the seventh over when Perry departed. Opener Beth Mooney’s unbeaten 61 saw them still reach their target in just 13 overs.
Earlier, West Indies batsman Diandra Dottin had to be carried off the field by her teammates after the pre-match anthem. Captain Hayley Matthews later said that Dottin, who came in to bat at number eight and scored an unbeaten 26, had “almost passed out”.
The second semi-final on Thursday evening is expected to be more competitive.
England are already sweating over the fitness of captain Nate Syver-Brant, who is suffering from a calf injury.
Perry’s apparent injury is perhaps the first hurdle in Australia’s quest for a seventh T20 World Cup – a pursuit that has so far been flawless.
