World Cup 2026: How Paraguay’s Orlando Gil went from obscurity to penalty hero

Almost a year after the birth of his son, and still only having played two first-team games, Gill was handed what proved to be a life-changing opportunity.

Argentine top-flight side San Lorenzo took a gamble on Gil, initially signing him on loan.

He finished 2024 playing in their reserves and became a regular in the first team in 2025, catching the attention of Paraguayan coach Gustavo Alfaro.

After receiving a call-up in March and June, and Paraguay having already qualified for the World Cup, Gill made his senior international debut in their final qualifier against Peru last September.

He played in five friendlies, earning the role of first-choice defender at the World Cup, which began with a 4–1 loss to co-hosts the United States.

However, Gill has since scored just one goal in three matches, including extra time against Germany, making 16 saves out of 17 shots on target.
