Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten commented on Morocco’s qualification for the round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating the Netherlands on penalties (3-2) after the first and extra time had ended in a draw (1-1) in the 3rd round match of the 2nd tournament in Mexico.
The Netherlands opened the scoring in the 72nd minute through Liverpool star Cody Jacobo, before the Moroccan side refused to give up as Issa Diop equalized in the first minute of second-half stoppage time (90+1), so the game went on for two more halves before being decided on penalties.
After the game, Rob Gitten posted a message on his official page, “X:“After an exciting match between the Windmills team and the Atlas Lions, the Netherlands’ World Cup journey has unfortunately come to an end. “It was a wonderful sight to see how sport brings people together and how Dutch fans, from all walks of life, capture everyone’s hearts with their mass marches.”
“It was a wonderful sight to see how the vast majority of the Moroccan-Dutch community celebrated their team’s well-deserved victory in a positive spirit, and how colleagues and competitors came together to support Cody Jacobo during this emotionally difficult time for him and his family. Many thanks to the Windmills team and all the best in their next tournament against Atlas.”
With the win, Morocco continued their journey to the 2026 World Cup with a round of 16 meeting with Canada, after the latter booked qualification with a penalty shootout win over South Africa.
