German movie actor Armie Hammer which is said to have been rejected by the German ratings board “inciting violence against immigrants” has gained worldwide coverage and an explosion in its numbers after a surprising move by Elon Musk.
Citizen Vigilante, a thriller featuring Hammer, written and directed by Uwe Boll, was aired for free on Musk’s account on X from Thursday to Sunday, giving a huge boost to his marketing and commercial profile. The film was released in the US on 19 June by Quiver Distribution, which according to Miscellaneousnow they have freedom all over the world. Musk also wrote: “Citizen Vigilante 2 will be even better.”
In an interview with the TelegraphBoll said that the film was refused a certificate by the German ratings board, FSK (Freiwillige Selbstkontrolle der Filmwirtschaft), saying that it was “a deliberate research decision”. He said: “I hired a lawyer to complain about the matter, but we lost six votes to two, as I was told that the film promotes immigration.
In what Boll calls “a brutal political film”, Hammer plays an American businessman who runs an anti-terrorist campaign in an uncharted European country. Boll says he was inspired by trial in Hamburg in 2016 in which three young people who were gang-raped were given suspended sentences. In a terrible commentVariety critic Todd Gilchrist called the film a “violent, inconsistent, immoral piece” and “at its worst, it feels like (Boll) is deliberately sabotaging his star”.
Boll, who is often called “the worst director of all time” is who said he retired in 2016he directed more than 30 films, including the critically acclaimed action films The Post and BloodRayne.
Musk’s intervention has given the film some cachet in the ongoing culture war, where Musk has been supporting immigrant rights activists, many of them. recently after the knife attack in Belfast in June. Boll He told Variety that Musk contacted the creators of his podcast Uwe Boll Raw to request the film. “I didn’t hang out with him or talk to him. It was very quick, you know. I think this guy, I don’t know what he does every day, but I think his interest went very quickly, you know. So, I also felt if we didn’t get along in some way, then he would just move on.”
Before Musk approved the film, Citizen Vigilante had already started controversy and threw Hammer forward, when the actor tried to get back after accusing him in 2021 of rape and abuse. Authorities in L.A. County have declined to pursue criminal charges against Hammerand denied the allegations that he is a cannibal and that he sleeps with several women in an interview with Tyler Ramsay and Louis Theroux.
Boll was also forced to change the film’s title from The Dark Knight later what he said was a “friendly discussion” and Batman studio Warner Bros.
