Yoan Wesa is looking forward to the challenge of facing one of the world’s best teams as the Democratic Republic of Congo take on England in a historic 2026 World Cup clash.
Coach Thomas Tuchel’s side begin their playoff campaign with a crucial match against the Panthers in round 32. In downtown Atlanta.
The Democratic Republic of Congo is making only its second appearance at the World Cup, and this is its first game in its history, after losing 3-1 to third-placed Uzbekistan on Saturday.
said Wesa, the Newcastle striker whose brace helped secure qualification“The England match will be different. It’s a tough, tough, very tough match against top players and elite competition.”
“We should enjoy these type of matches. We deserve to play against England, one of the best teams in the world, so I can’t wait to see what happens.”
Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Axel Tuanzebe and Noah Sadeki are among the familiar faces in the DR Congo squad, with Wesa leading the attack.
The 29-year-old arrives at the World Cup eager to prove his worth after a £55 million ($72.9 million) deal with Newcastle was completed following a dismal first season following his move from Brentford last summer.
Vesa suffered a knee injury on international duty before scoring with the club, which was limited to just three goals in his shirt in all competitions.
The player is determined to prove that his disappointing first season on Tyneside was nothing more than a passing failure.
He said: “That’s why I’m more proud than anyone in this room, because it was tough. It was a serious injury. You know when you want to come back early, catch the train, it’s not a good thing.”
He continued. “I wasn’t at my best at Newcastle, but I knew there would be a time to prove myself… and that time is now.”
He explained. “I’m showing everyone now that I’m in a good position, I’m physically good, I’m mentally good, and that’s why I’m proud to show against Uzbekistan that I’m a good player.”
He concluded. “I know how to play football, especially when I’m physically fit, my mind is calm and the rest comes one after the other.”
