Son breaks his silence with emotional apology after World Cup shock

The apology came a day after coach Hong Myung-bo resigned as coach of the South Korean national team after last Saturday’s results forced the team out of the round of 32 as one of the top eight teams that finished third in the group stage.

This generation of the Korean national team was expected to go far in the tournament, with a talented squad featuring Son, PSG midfielder Lee Kang-in and Bayern Munich defender Kim Min-jae as they were expected to qualify for the knockout stages after draws with the Czech Republic and Mexico.

South Korea began their campaign with a 2-0 win over the Czech Republic, but back-to-back defeats to Mexico and South Africa left them dependent on the results of their other matches, ultimately failing to secure a place in the knockout stages.

The son expressed his feelings through a lengthy post on his personal account on the Instagram platform.“I don’t know where to start. I can’t pretend I don’t know what happened, and I don’t want to run away from reality.”

The captain of the Korean national team continued his post saying: “First of all, I want to express my sincere apologies to the South Korean people and to all fans who love football.”

“As a football fan, I can only imagine the nausea, disappointment and pain you felt watching such matches. Because of this, I feel that the simple word (sorry) cannot express the extent of the disappointment and pain you feel.

“I will do everything in my power to make all your hearts happy again. I have never forgotten the promises I made to our fans, and my soul and body will remain in the service of preparing to deliver the best as long as I am called upon and as long as you need me.”
