Bradford must contend with the reign of Betfred Super League man of steel Jake Connor if they are to mark their return to a magical weekend with a long-awaited top-flight away win at Liverpool next Sunday.
Leeds head coach Brad Arthur moved to allay fears that Conner could miss the big West Yorkshire derby with 10 minutes remaining in Friday night’s impressive win over Hull KR at Headingley.
Connor scored one try, assisted four others and scored seven goals in seven to continue his remarkable run of form, and Arthur hinted straight after the game that he hoped his withdrawal was a precautionary measure.
Arthur confirmed on Monday: “Jake was a little bit upset going into the game so we got into position with like 10 minutes to go where the luxury was.
“It was nothing to do with disrespecting the opposition. Jack got some bumps and bruises and he’s really important to us. The result was off and we have to look to next week.”
Sunday’s clash at the Hill Dickinson Stadium will represent Bradford’s first Magic Weekend clash since they finished their final season in the top flight in 2014, before being mired in a decade of financial strife.
But the history of such big occasions – not least the infamous clash with Leeds on Magic Weekend in 2007 that saw referee Steve Ganson award Leeds a controversial, match-winning penalty for which he later apologized – still weighs heavily on Odsall.
Add in the extra incentive for the Bulls to record their first away win in the top flight in more than 4,000 days, a win in London on Super League’s farewell day in September 2014, and Bulls head coach Kurt Haggerty recognizes the importance of the occasion.
“My biggest bugbear at the club is that we haven’t got that win on the road yet, and it’s really starting to bother me,” Haggerty said.
“I think we’ve added to the competition this season and we’ve shown we can pretty much turn any team around on our day. So it’s great to have the Bulls back on the big stage.
“We want to get our first away win against Leeds, if not this weekend, then at Headingley. But a win this weekend will resonate quite well with most fans.”
