A shocking exit
Former Germany captain Ilkay Gundogan launched a scathing attack on VAR technology after Jonathan Tah’s crucial goal was disallowed in a penalty shoot-out that sent the Machines out of the World Cup tournament.
The German team leaves the World Cup in the 32nd final in the United States of America, having achieved a very disappointing result. After suffering an unexpected loss from the national team of Paraguay.
The team from South America continued to exploit gaps in a shaky German defense before the Germans were able to come back and the game ended in penalties.
A late penalty shoot-out decided the identity of the final after Jonathan Tah hit the ball over the crossbar and Jose Canale scored the winner for Paraguay, despite the latter missing two chances to decide the match from the penalty spot.
The German defender rose to head home at the far post after a curling corner in the 102nd minute, a goal that looked to have guaranteed the Machines a place in the last 16.
The match saw VAR intervention and the referee disallowed the goal, deeming the contact between the Paraguayan goalkeeper and Waldemar Anton enough to call a foul.
The decision sparked ridicule and harsh criticism from BBC pundit Alan Shearer, before Gundogan took to social media to claim that Premier League clubs do it all year with impunity, describing the decision as wrong and bitterly disappointing.
Gundoghan wrote in his account of “X” network.Today’s performance by the team certainly needs no embellishment… but what is this damn video technology decision?’
He added: “In the English Premier League, they would be content with a sarcastic smile for something like that, especially when they were reversing a decision.”
He concluded. “Of course, that was also bitterly disappointing and unfortunately we couldn’t convince ourselves over the course of 120 minutes.”
