NBA: Memphis Grizzlies trade two-time All-Star Jay Morant to Portland Trail Blazers | NBA News

Ja Morant is headed to Portland after the Trail Blazers and Memphis Grizzlies agreed to a trade on Monday.

The move would give the two-time All-Star a chance to revive his career, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press.

In return, the AP understands Portland is sending forwards Jeremy Grant and Chris Murray to the Grizzlies as part of the deal.

That could suggest a big swing by the Trail Blazers and Portland — with new owner Tom Dundon, whose Carolina Hurricanes just won the Stanley Cup — might not be moved.

Morant adds to a logjam at point guard for Portland right now, with Zooey Holiday, Damian Lillard and Scoot Henderson on the current roster.

The 26-year-old averaged a career-high 22.4 points but has played in just 79 games over the past three seasons due to injuries and suspensions, including a 25-game ban after Morant was seen on a livestream in the passenger seat of a car with a gun.

It also came not long after an eight-game suspension for flashing a gun at a Denver-area nightclub, which also caught on on social media.

After being drafted with the No. 2 pick in the 2019 draft, Morant began his path to superstardom before being crowned the 2020 Rookie of the Year and the league’s Most Improved Player in 2021-22.

The suspensions, combined, cost Morant nearly $9 million in lost salary. He said in April 2025 that he had made peace with being a lightning rod for constant criticism.

“I’m kind of used to it,” Morant said at the time. “I’ve been a villain for two years now.

“Every little thing, if somebody says something negative about me, it’s going out there. So, yeah. I don’t care anymore.”

Grant averaged 18.6 points last season for Portland and will join his sixth team in Memphis. Murray averaged 5.8 points per game for the Trail Blazers last season.

Memphis won 56 games in Morant’s MIP-award year in 2021-22, setting a franchise record.

That team was built around a young core four — Morant, Dillon Brooks, Jaren Jackson Jr. and Desmond Benn.

And now, they are all gone. Brooks played one more season with the Grizzlies after that and has changed teams twice since Ben went to Orlando last summer and Jackson was traded to Utah in February.
