2026 World Cup: VAR defeats Germany on penalties to Paraguay

Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who was working for German television during the World Cup, likened the disallowed goal to many of Premier League champions Arsenal’s goals during the season.

Klopp told Magenta TV: “Arsenal wouldn’t be champions of England if the goal wasn’t legal. They score 60% of their goals that way.

“We (Germany) win the game when the ball goes in. Of course it’s brutal.”

Former Premier League assistant referee Darren Khan commented on the decision when play resumed.

“This is soft in my opinion,” Cann told BBC One.

But judging by what we’ve seen so far in the tournament, I wouldn’t be surprised if they ban me.

“We’ve seen two or three goals go away with very small mistakes, that’s nothing.

“It’s a small block on the goal, but it’s not enough for me, I guess they will decide this. We feel that this should not be banned.”

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live in Boston, ex-Scotland winger Pat Nevin believes the obvious foul was not clear enough to keep the goal out.

He said: “It’s a mess around. There’s a block – did he touch the goalkeeper? Apparently.

“It’s a subjective call. That’s unclear.”
