Scotland’s next manager: the harsh reality behind calls for David Moyes and Ange Postecoglou

For Postecoglou out of work, who has sometimes provided tactical insight on the Scots during his World Cup punditry duties this summer, the timing could be right.

But the elephant in the house, again, will involve numbers if he is keen to return to Scotland.

The former Celtic manager was sacked by Nottingham Forest in October after just 39 days in charge.

It came just four months after Spurs released him, winning their first Europa League trophy in just 17 years.

The Australians’ feisty, winning mentality will invigorate Scotland’s fanbase, many of whom are disappointed with Clarke’s approach to the tournament.

Many of these Scottish supporters will have been introduced to a thrilling brand of regular football during a trophy-laden spell at Celtic.

Postecoglou has four years’ experience in senior international management, having been Australia boss between 2013 and 2017.

He won the 2015 Asian Cup after leading the nation to the 2014 World Cup, where they were eliminated in the group stage in a brutal group featuring Spain, 2010 runners-up Netherlands and Chile.

Postecoglou ticks almost every box, but with a reported £5m annual salary at Spurs and a supposed £3m-a-season deal at Forest, it would be fanciful to think the SFA could come anywhere close to matching those figures.

Although Clarke seemed like the standout candidate at the time – and went on to prove himself the right choice – poaching him from Kilmarnock highlighted the pond Scotland were fishing in.

With standards raised after three grand final appearances throughout the Clarke era, the coming weeks will tell us how ambitious the SFA are in their search to replace the nation’s most successful men’s head coach.
