The long-delayed defense investment plan will be published on Tuesday

A long-delayed military spending plan will be published on Tuesday, with Sir Keir Starmer saying Britain is “safe and secure for a long time to come”.

The Ministry of Defense said the Defense Investment Plan includes an estimated investment of £5 billion to increase the armed forces’ use of drones and weapons.

Earlier this month, the Treasury and No 10 agreed a £13.5bn funding increase, far short of the £28bn the MOD wants – although new Defense Secretary Dan Jarvis has pushed for a further increase in recent weeks. His predecessor, John Haley, resigned over the financial row.

The Conservatives said the plan was “too little, too late”, while the Liberal Democrats said it “dangerously short-changes our military”.

Despite his imminent departure from Downing Street, Prime Minister Sir Keir is pushing ahead with the DIP.

Tense Whitehall negotiations over how to fund it have been going on for months, with government departments being asked to make cuts.

It was originally expected to be published in the fall of 2025. Following months of talks on funding, the DIP has now arrived just ahead of the July 7 NATO summit in Turkey.

Earlier this month, Haley left the government, saying the DIP fell “far short” of what was needed to protect the UK and meet existing spending commitments, with Defense Secretary Al Carnes saying “change is not enough” in a rapidly escalating war.

Jarvis reportedly secured some additional funding for the plan. He also spent the last two weeks “refocusing” on DIP to take more lessons from Ukraine and Iran, Modi said.

This includes how drones are used to destroy high-value targets, Jarvis said, “The nature of warfare is changing rapidly.”

He said: “In Ukraine and the Middle East, disjointed systems are defining conflicts.

“This major UK investment in these new technologies will support the best of our defense industry and help our military stay ahead of our adversaries.”

Sir Kiir said there would be “game-changing investment” in strengthening forces on land, sea and air.

“Today’s defense investment plan will help drive growth across the UK, giving confidence, certainty and support to our industrial base, developing and expanding the technologies that will see our country into the long-term future.”

His comments came after trade unions and defense organizations warned that continued delays to the DIP were a “threat” to British jobs, skills and national security.
