Heroic quality…and unconvincing presentation.
Brazil’s bid for a place in the 2026 World Cup finals has been in the international press following Monday’s thrilling comeback in Houston with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Japan.
The tight organization and defensive stability, as well as the unexpected counter-attacks relied on by the Japanese side, wore down Vinicius Junior’s team-mates, who put in a dismal first-half performance, before turning around in the second half, where they sealed victory with goals from Casemiro (56th minute) and Gabriel Martine (90th minute).
Brazil fell behind early in the first half due to Danilo’s misplaced pass in midfield and Casemiro’s lack of form saw Japan’s Sano cross to the edge of the box and then fire into the net from Alisson’s right.
In the second half, Casemiro restored the balance, scoring with a header after a pass from Gabriel Magallanes. With the game looking set to go into extra time, Martinelli received a cross from inside the box and fired the ball into the net in stoppage time (96) to turn the score around and send Brazil through to the Round of 16, where they await their next opponent in Norway-Côte d’Ivoire.
The French magazine L’Equipe described the Brazil-Vance match as “epic”. Other publications around the world highlighted the brace from Martinelli and Casemiro, who scored Brazil’s goals and helped them qualify for the last 16.
The American website “The Athletic” and the Portuguese newspaper “Apola” praised the substitutions made by Carlo Ancelotti in the second half, which, according to their publications, were decisive for Brazil’s comeback and qualification.
The Spanish newspaper AS wrote: “There will never be a team like Brazil in the history of the World Cup, and a team that embodies this winning spirit or achieves so much success. So they decided to win at the last minute. As “Real” does with clubs. They are inseparable, each in their own league.

A newspaper commented Keeper British. “This was not the first time that the Brazilian national team could not perform convincingly for a long time. And this wasn’t the first time he got away with it. It may seem incomprehensible, but Carlo Ancelotti’s method, which worked with “Real”, is giving results again.

The Argentinian Tyc Sport chain says: “Heroic qualification for Brazil… In Houston, the Canaries came from behind to overturn the result in the final minutes to secure their place at the next stage of the 2026 World Cup. Now he is waiting for a game against Norway or Ivory Coast.”

The Argentinian Ole website commented on Brazil’s victory. “The focus was more on the jersey than the game. And more avoiding embarrassment than (tactical) ideas… Brazil qualified for the round of 16 with a surprise goal a minute before extra time.”
