Wimbledon 2026 results: Novak Djokovic beats Wu Yibing in ‘challenging’ first-round match

A break in the first game proved enough to see Djokovic through to the opening set, but Wu held on in the second before hitting a decisive 6-5 with him.

There was nothing to separate the pair in the third set, although Djokovic’s fitness was tested as he and Wu exchanged heavy groundstrokes in long baseline rallies.

Wu was also cheered by a draw-out with his name – the chant used by the Center Court crowd for Holger Rune in 2024, when Djokovic accused fans of using it. An excuse to disrespect him.

But while Djokovic occasionally looked at his team or nodded after Wu’s winner, he reveled in the atmosphere, even inviting more boos from the crowd when he finally wrapped up the third set on a fourth set point.

The seventh seed’s game featured more unforced errors in the fourth set, but she managed to fend off six break points before breaking back at 4-4 and sealing victory after three hours and 12 minutes on court.

“He put me under a lot of pressure,” Djokovic added. “He definitely surprised me with the level of every shot in his game, from his return serve, forehand, backhand.

“He didn’t really have a weakness at some points.”

While Djokovic celebrated by mimicking a violin – a tribute to his daughter – Wu walked off the court to a roar, fans chanting his name to thank him for an entertaining evening.

Djokovic’s reward for coming through a tough first-round match is a meeting with Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas, whom he defeated in the finals of the 2021 French Open and 2023 Australian Open.
