World Cup conflicts are heating up intensely
The Asian continent is set to bid farewell to the 2026 World Cup after its teams suffered back-to-back eliminations, the most recent of which was Japan’s dramatic 1-2 loss to Brazil in the Round of 32, leaving just one team carrying the continent’s hopes in the tournament.
As Egypt prepare to face Australia in the Round of 32 on Friday, the focus will be on a game that could mark the official end of Asia’s journey at the current World Cup or give the continent the kiss of life before the finals kick off.
Asia entered the 2026 World Cup with nine teams represented, its largest participation in the tournament’s history, with ambitions to confirm the great development that Asian football has witnessed in recent years.
But the results fell far short of expectations, after South Korea, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Iraq, Jordan and Uzbekistan crashed out of the group stage, before being joined by a Japanese team seen as the most popular Asian contenders to progress.

Australia, on the other hand, are clinging to the last threads of hope not only to qualify for the next round, but also to maintain an Asian presence in the knockout stages, after every team on the continent was relegated in succession.
Friday’s clash will be of a special nature as it will not only be a match for a place in the last 16, but it could turn into a turning point in the entire path of Asian football if the Egyptian national team manages to defeat Australia and completely stop the participation of the yellow continent in the current World Cup.
