Didier Deschamps, the coach of the French national team, intends to make a big surprise ahead of the 2026 World Cup with an unusual step.
French newspaper L’Equipe has revealed that Deschamps, 57, is seriously considering including Hugo Lloris in France’s squad for the next World Cup hosted by the USA, Canada and Mexico, despite the goalkeeper’s official announcement that he will retire from international football in January 2023.
The paper explains that Deschamps is looking to bring in a player with a lot of experience at the big tournaments, especially after he currently has the options of a third goalkeeper available to him.

A career full of accomplishments
39-year-old Lloris is considered one of the most outstanding goalkeepers in the history of the French national team, as he played 145 international matches, during which he captained the team in 121 matches.
Lloris capped his international career by leading the Roosters to win the 2018 World Cup in Russia in addition to winning the UEFA Nations League title in 2021, making him one of the most decorated players in the national team’s history.
Crisis in the Third Guard
According to L’Equipe, Deschamps’ intention to call up Lloris is due to PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier not featuring regularly for his club this season, which has affected his willingness to play internationally.
The newspaper also noted that Deschamps is not entirely convinced by the options of Alphonse Areola or Jean Bottes as the third goalkeeper, prompting him to consider the unconventional solution of bringing back Lloris.

Advisory and leadership role
L’Equipe confirmed that Deschamps needs Lloris’ experience not only on the pitch but also in the dressing room, where he can contribute to the atmosphere and offer advice to the young talents taking part in the World Cup.
The newspaper explained that the position of the third goalkeeper is considered to be a backup role at best, as he is not called upon to participate, except in exceptional cases, such as a serious injury or suspension of the first and second goalkeepers.
Lloris will not refuse to help
L’Equipe suggested that Lloris, despite his official retirement, would not refuse to support his country’s national team if asked, especially as the proposed role does not require him to force himself into the starting line-up, but is limited to technical and moral contributions.

The precedent was to open the door
The magazine concluded by noting that the return of the veteran star to the French national team is not unusual for Deschamps, who has previously invited midfielder N’Golo Kante to take part in recent matches despite his long absence from the international scene.
