A JetBlue Airways pilot shot down a drone while approaching John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, officials said.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FA) said the plane landed safely and a post-flight inspection found no damage. The agency has started an investigation into the matter.
The incident is the latest in recent developments involving drones and commercial aircraft.
Just days before the JetBlue incident, a United Airlines pilot reported a collision with a drone on approach to Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey.
The FAA said the JetBlue pilot reported striking the drone at an altitude of 3,000ft (900m) around 07:15 EDT (11:15 GMT).
“We’re clear to land, 13 to go,” the pilot said in air traffic control audio recorded by ATC.com, according to CNN. “Quickly, I couldn’t talk to get closer, but in turn we collided with a drone drone.”
“You said you crashed?” asked the supervisor.
The pilot confirmed, “Yes, we got it right above the cockpit.”
In a statement to the BBC, JetBlue said: “The flight landed without incident, customers departed as normal, and the aircraft was taken out of service for a post-flight inspection, which found no damage or evidence of a collision.”
The FAA estimates it receives more than 100 reports of drone sightings at airports each month, despite local regulations prohibiting unauthorized drone operations.
The agency warned that unauthorized operators could face “serious fines and criminal charges, including jail time.”
