Some of WhatsApp More wanted information comes out of the beta. Later this year, the messaging app used by more than 3 billion people plans to add usernames. It’s an advanced (and confidential) method of WhatsApp users to communicate without sharing phone numbers.
But that means that the race to successfully hack WhatsApp usernames is about to begin. Hold tight.
WhatsApp says that user registration will open this week on the platform, and you will see notifications in the app when it becomes available. Check in the app to go Favorites Then Account. This is where you can find it User ID tab if enabled. Next, you will have the option to create a new username or port for your existing username Instagram or Facebook. WhatsApp offers a login generator, but you can also go with your gut (or really whatever you’re feeling at the moment).
“Usernames are designed to give you control over who can see your phone number,” says Alice Newton-Rex, vice president of Product at WhatsApp. “It’s optional; you choose your username, you can change it or delete it, and it doesn’t have to match your handle or account name on any other app.”
Newton-Rex confirmed that the WhatsApp interface was designed around the users confidential. There is no list of words that people can search for. Users can also add additional security by only allowing people who know a unique four-digit key, in addition to their username, to connect to them.

These usernames will be optional, but Newton-Rex sees this new option as a secret option for many users who have already expressed their excitement. He said: “I think we will see many people adopting other children, but it is one of the things we will learn when we start adopting other children.”
WhatsApp does not shy away from this similarity with its competitors. “Signal usage names are probably a good comparison,” says Newton-Rex. “This will work in a very similar way.” A symbol released usernames on its platform in 2024. Many messaging apps are still experimenting with different ways for users to connect without sharing numbers. For example, Diseases of DM allows its users to create “burner cards” so that people can connect with multiple groups in different ways.
