The United States Supreme Court refused to allow US President Donald Trump to fire Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, denial about Trump attempt to oust the Fed governor appointed by Biden amid domestic fraud charges.
The Supreme Court issued a 5-4 decision on Monday, blocking Trump’s bid to become the first president to remove the head of the Fed since Congress created the central bank in 1913.

Chief Justice John Roberts and conservative Brett Kavanaugh, who was appointed in Trump’s first term, joined the court’s three judges. Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett dissented.
In August, Trump cited unsubstantiated allegations of housing fraud in an attempt to fire Cook, who said the allegations were motivated by a bid to attract money. He also repeatedly attacked the central bank and launched an investigation into then-Governor Jerome Powell, which was seen as a political setback when the Fed refused to cut interest rates as quickly as Trump wanted.
Roberts said Trump “didn’t give Cook the immunity he was legally entitled to. Without that immunity, he wouldn’t have been able to challenge the president’s allegations against him.”
Roberts also said that central bank governors “don’t serve at the pleasure of the president – instead they serve for more than 14 years, and can be removed ‘for cause,'” Roberts said.
“We hold that such immunity from removal is inconsistent with the separation of powers inherent in the Constitution,” the chief justice wrote to the court.
Cook praised the high court’s decision. Cook said it helps keep the central bank independent and free from political interference.
“This was not about the loan documents that were signed years before I became governor of the Federal Reserve. It was an attempt to remove me from a tradition created because I refused to bow to political pressure and continue to put fixed interest rates on what would best serve the American people,” said Cook.
The justices rejected a request from Trump’s Justice Department to vacate a judge’s decision to block Cook from being fired while challenging his impeachment. Cook disputed Trump’s claims.
Cook’s term in office was to run until 2038. He was nominated by former Democratic President Joe Biden in 2022.
The a case against Cook’s pages for the reason that he said that he has two places, in Michigan and Georgia, as “homes” in June and July 2021, before joining the Fed board. Such claims can result in lower interest rates and lower returns than if one of them were advertised as a rental or second home.
The programs, Solicitor General D John Sauer said in January, are evidence of “gross negligence” and give Trump grounds to fire him. In any case, he argued, the courts should not review his decision, and Cook has no right to a hearing.
Cook has denied any wrongdoing and has not been charged.
When the jury in October agreed to hear Cook’s case, he was relieved of his duties at that time. The Supreme Court heard the case in January, with Cook and Powell present.
In another decision on Monday, the Supreme Court upheld Trump’s firing of Rebecca Slaughter, a member of the Democratic Federal Trade Commission, expanding his power over the government and overturning a 1935 precedent that recognized Congress’ authority to protect the heads of certain regulatory agencies from being removed by the president at will.
Cook’s decision on Monday follows the February 20 decision of the jury in another case with serious economic problems, and reduced many of the international tariffs of Trump, a decision that led to the court’s opposition to the President.
