Wimbledon 2026 results: Janic Ciner survives five-set scare against Miomir Kekmanovic

Janic Cena survived an almighty scare as he opened his Wimbledon title defense with a five-set comeback win over inspired opponent Miomir Kekmanovic on Center Court.

One to one month Seismic second round damage At the French Open, four-time major winner Cena recovered from an error-prone start and an awkward fall to defeat his 50th-ranked opponent 4-6 6-3 6-7 (6-8) 6-2 6-3 in three-and-a-half hours.

Ciner opted against competing in a grass-court tournament in the lead-up to Wimbledon, with this being his first match since a stunning collapse against Argentina’s Juan Manuel Cerundolo, whom he led in two sets and 5–1 at Roland Garros.

After physically shutting down in the heat of Paris that day, Siner was thoroughly tested by Kekmanovic and was lucky to escape relatively unscathed after a moment of genuine concern inside the stadium court.

When Sinner slipped behind the baseline during the third set and took time to get back to his feet, the umpire proceeded to check his fitness.

Siner’s shoe was seen bleeding during the Italian’s must-win fourth set, which he later explained was caused by a problematic toenail.

But Ciner raised his level when it really mattered to avoid another early exit, improving on his poor recent record in five-set matches to lose in the first round to avoid becoming only the third defending Wimbledon men’s champion.

More to follow.
