Surprise. Al-Mashal’s resignation is incomplete.

The arena is dominated by the departure of the president of the Saudi Arabian Federation

Yasser Al-Mashal’s resignation from the presidency of the Saudi Arabian Football Federation sparked widespread controversy, but new developments have shown that his announcement of his departure on Platform X was not considered sufficient from a legal point of view, raising questions about his official position so far.

Al-Mashal announced his resignation on Monday morning, days after Saudi Arabia’s national team was knocked out of the 2026 World Cup group stage, following widespread public outrage demanding comprehensive changes to Saudi Arabia’s football system.

Legal experts. Processes not completed

According to the newspaper, in 2018SportsLawyers Khaled Abu Rashid and Riyad Al-Zahrani, who specialize in sports law, confirmed that announcing the resignation through the “X” platform does not represent the full legal procedure, but is considered a declaration of intention to leave before public opinion.

The two experts explained that the system requires the president of the federation to submit a written and formal resignation to the relevant body of the Saudi Arabian Football Association before the resignation takes effect and all legal procedures are completed.

Khaled Abu Rashid pointed out that announcing resignation through a personal account does not automatically mean the end of all powers or the loss of membership in continental and international federations, explaining that the continuation of such membership depends on the nature of the position held within each party.

He added that the statute of the Saudi Arabian Federation provides that the vice president manages the affairs of the federation and will exercise the powers of the president in his absence or vacancy, immediately after the resignation takes effect and the completion of its statutory procedures.

For his part, Riyad Al-Zahrani explained that the phrase that Al-Meshal used in his resignation statement, in which he confirmed that he took full responsibility for the failure, was considered a literary and administrative statement to the general public, but it did not entail any legal consequences or personal responsibility under the applicable regulations.

Regarding Al-Mashal’s membership in Asian and international federations, Abu Rashid explained that the issue depends on the nature of that membership. If it is related to the position of the president of the Saudi Arabian Federation, then it ends with the end of his term of office. However, if he has been elected in his personal capacity to one of the continental or international offices, his membership shall continue until the end of the election period in accordance with the regulations governing those federations.
