Paraguay coach Gustavo Alfaro has confirmed his side will be inspired by previous wins over Argentina and Brazil in World Cup qualifiers when they face four-time world champions Germany on Monday.
Alvaro said At the press conference of the meeting“We faced Argentina and Brazil and beat them, which are teams of the same stature or maybe a higher level than Germany.”
Paraguay’s national team qualified for the World Cup for the first time since 2010 when they narrowly lost to Spain, who went on to win the title, in the quarter-finals after a poor start to the qualifiers, but turned around after Alvaro’s appointment in August 2024.
Alvaro led the team to victory over two neighboring giants of the South American football continent.
Paraguay’s campaign at the tournament saw a rocky start as they lost 4-1 to co-hosts the United States, followed by a 1-0 win over Turkey in a match that saw the Paraguayan sent off and saw 33 goal attempts from their opponents before a 0-0 draw with Australia.
These results ensured Paraguay struggled through to the first knockout round.
Paraguay will compete against Germany In the absence of midfielder Diego Gomez, who was suspended for receiving two yellow cards in the group stage.
Media reports that central defender Omar Alderete is suffering from an injury.
The team reinstates the services of another creative player in the squad, Miguel Almiron, following a one-match suspension after being red carded for covering his mouth during an altercation in the win over Turkey.
Alvaro, who has previously coached Ecuador and Costa Rica in addition to Boca Juniors in his native Argentina, said he had packed a ton of work to prepare for the Germany game but was satisfied with one practice session for Monday’s match near Boston, home of the American Football League’s New England Patriots.
Paraguay captain Gustavo Gomez, along with Alvaro, spoke about the importance of playing against the best teams in South America as part of the process of reaching the World Cup.
“Everything we went through and reached the qualifiers, facing very strong opponents like Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, Ecuador and Colombia, it made us go through a lot of pressure situations and we overcame them.”
