The candidate endorsed by United States President Donald Trump has won the Republican primary in Louisiana, giving him a chance to win a seat in the US Senate in November.
Julia Letlow, the current US representative, defeated state Treasurer John Fleming in a two-way race on Tuesday.

As he faces Democrat Jamie Davis, a farmer, in the November midterm elections, Letlow will be a favorite in the heavily Republican-leaning southern region.
Trump had entered the race in the first round of the primary voting on May 16. He endorsed Letlow while publicly opposing Senator Bill Cassidy.
Cassidy was one of the few Republicans who voted to impeach Trump following his impeachment on January 6, 2021, after an attack on the US Capitol by his supporters.
A doctor, Cassidy also clashed with the Trump administration on health care under Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F Kennedy Jr.
However, Cassidy has been very supportive of Trump’s actions in recent years, trying to improve relations with the president.
He finally he finished third in the first round of voting behind Letlow and former Congressman Fleming, both of whom have been supporters of Trump’s Make America Great Again (MAGA) group.
Letlow’s victory confirms that Trump continues to control large Republican districts.
He successfully supported his opponent, Congressman Thomas Massie, another senior Republican an opponent President, in Kentucky, and loyally supported Ken Paxton over Senator John Cornyn in Texas.
Trump did not fare well in the gubernatorial races, while his supporters failed to win the Republican contests in Iowa and Georgia.
It is unclear whether Trump’s participation will be beneficial in the general election, where Democrats will try to wrest control of the US House of Representatives and the Senate from Republicans.
Polls have shown support for Trump among many voters. His approval rating has plummeted amid the US-Israeli war with Iran, which has taken a toll on the US economy.
His aggressive crackdown on deportations has also received a backlash, particularly following the killing of two US citizens and immigrants in January.
The political climate threatens to empower Democrats and alienate nonpartisan voters.
Some Republican officials have also criticized Trump’s tendency to choose loyalty over efficiency.
For example, Republican Party leaders have expressed deep dismay at Trump’s endorsement of Paxton over Cornyn in Texas.
Paxton, the state’s top attorney, was seen as the top judge weak chosen than Cornyn who is in charge of the election.
He is now expected to face a tough race against Democratic primary challenger James Talarico, a Presbyterian seminarian who has gained power in the state with his combination of faith and liberal principles.
