At least 11 people have died after a passenger plane crashed in the northeastern French town of Tomblaine, authorities said.

The plane went down at 11 a.m. Sunday, Yves Seguy, director of the Meurthe-et-Moselle region, told reporters near the crash site.

The pilot and all 10 people – five students and five teachers – died in the crash.

Seguy said emergency workers responded immediately, adding that authorities are collecting statements from witnesses.

Police have urged people to “avoid” the area around the airport in Tomblaine to allow emergency responders and law enforcement to reach the scene of the crash.

The Ministry of the Interior said that Minister of the Interior Laurent Nunez is on his way to the site.
