World Cup 2026: Jessie Marsh on track to become Canadian hero with historic run

When Marsh kept Leeds in the Premier League on the final day of the 2022-23 season, he could hardly have imagined he would be sacked a few months later.

But it came after a run of seven games without a win, with Marsh later describing the decision as “stupid”.

It was a significant blow for the 52-year-old, who had long harbored ambitions to coach at the highest level. But another opportunity came in 2024, with USA jobs.

The chance to manage his own country would have been a dream come true but, despite believing the job was his, the USA decided to go with Mauricio Pochettino instead.

Then came Canada.

Marsh was offered the position in May 2024 and accepted it, promising to “unite the Canadian soccer community” with the goal of being competitive for the 2026 World Cup.

“I think what happened with the US role is burning with him, but it’s burning with him in a way that helps him now,” Soccer America’s Scott French, who has worked with Marsh before, told BBC Sport.

“He has a chip on his shoulder.”

Marsh threw herself fully into the role, traveling to nine cities in 10 days, meeting with fans and taking in as much Canadian culture as possible.

He has also worked to develop deep personal connections with members of the Canada squad, paying personal visits or inviting players and their families to his home in Italy for the holidays.

No doubt the hard yards he put in during those early days have paid off, as has a close bond, developed between players and fans.

An example of his impact on players is Liam Miller, who suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury at the end of 2024.

At times the midfielder questioned whether he would be able to return to anything like the player he once was, but Marsh – as he does with anyone suffering from a bad injury – spent a significant amount of time watching him and examining him.

While Miller was undergoing rehabilitation in Italy, Marsh invited the midfielder to his home and to spend time with his family.

Miller not only returned to full fitness but helped Hull City secure promotion back to the Premier League at the end of last season and is now a key player for Canada at this World Cup.

“I know all the players but I’ve gotten to know Liam really well and I think our relationship has become something he’s come to rely on,” Marsh said.
