Iran’s disallowed goal gives Senegal the kiss of life

One decision saved the Teranga Lions’ fortunes

The assistant referee’s decision in the final minutes of the Egypt-Iran match was not just a refereeing shot that caused controversy. Rather, it turned into a defining moment that reshaped the map of the 2026 World Cup Round of 32 qualifiers and gave Senegal the “kiss of life” it never dreamed of before the final whistle.

The referee disallowed Iran’s goal in the last hour due to offside, tying the game at 1-1.

The result qualified the Egyptian national team for the Round of 32 in Group 7 with 5 points, while the Iranian national team dropped to third place with 3 points.

Had the goal counted, Iran would have jumped to second place by 5 points, while Egypt would have dropped to third place by 4 points, a point that would also have ensured its qualification among the best 3rd place teams.

However, the scenario created by the decision to cancel the goal was harsher towards Iran and more merciful towards Senegal.

Instead of qualifying outright, Iran found themselves in a three-point race for one of the top third places, losing the race on seeding difference, while Senegal grabbed the last place in the round of 32.

So the disallowed goal not only changed the fortunes of Egypt, who qualified as runners-up in the group, but also changed the knockout stages of the final qualifiers, after giving Senegal a golden chance to continue their journey at the World Cup, while Iran bowed out of the tournament despite being one touch away from qualifying.
