Nine of the ten teams qualify for the Round of 32
Africa set a new World Cup record after a remarkable performance in the first round of the 2026 World Cup, which is hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Nine African nations advanced to the round of 32, representing the African continent’s highest-ever representation in a World Cup knockout stage.
This percentage represents 28.1% of those qualifying for the knockout stages, the highest percentage ever recorded in the continent’s history at the World Cup, after expanding the participation base to 48 teams for the first time.
The 9 qualifying teams are Morocco, Egypt, South Africa, Cote d’Ivoire, Cape Verde, Senegal, Ghana, Democratic Republic of Congo and Algeria. Of the ten who qualified for this edition, only Tunisia failed to make it through a very poor performance.
This number paves the way for the expected record of the most African teams to have qualified for the round of 16 as well.
The analyst believes Fox SportsFormer Liverpool star Peter Crouch has said it is “a matter of time before an African team wins the World Cup”.
In the 32nd round, South Africa will play against Canada, Morocco against the Netherlands, Egypt against Australia, and Cape Verde against Argentina. Algeria will also face Switzerland, while the Democratic Republic of Congo will face England, while Ghana will play Colombia, Senegal will play Belgium and Ivory Coast will play Norway.
