It was not immediately clear who was arrested. There was no official statement that an arrest had been made by the Iraqi government or security forces.
A security expert told Al Jazeera that senior Iraqi forces carried out a major construction operation at dawn in the International Zone (Green Zone) and several areas in Baghdad.
The source said the arrests were carried out by the Counter Terrorism Service and stemmed from the arrest of Adnan al-Jumaili, the deputy oil minister, last month on corruption charges.
Iraq’s new prime minister, Ali al-Zaidi, has vowed to tackle the corruption and mismanagement that has plagued Iraq for decades.
Authority they held a total of $86m this month which was allegedly part of the corruption case against al-Jumaili.
The Associated Press reported that seven people were arrested on Sunday, including five members of parliament. It cited the security report it found. The AP said some of those arrested were from former Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani’s political group.
In November’s parliamentary elections, al-Sudani’s party won the largest number of seats, but did not return as prime minister. He stepped aside from the crisis in the Coordination Framework, a group of Shia parties allied with Iran that brought al-Sudani to power. They disagreed for months on who they liked for the position.
