Because it dries quickly, it’s also great for swimming. They have stepped into the safety zone of the majority of people. I wear mine to the beach and pool. When I go on vacation, I carry three or four sunglasses and usually go to the laundry in town when I don’t have any sunglasses that aren’t salty from the sweat and/or waves in Maine.
On a hot, sunny day, they are often cooler than bare skin. Yes, long-sleeve sundresses pack a lot, but because the fabric is light and breathable—and I only wear mine in a bag—it blocks the sun’s rays and emits so much heat that I find it better than any or no clothing.
Here are four favorites from my sun hoodie collection—I have a lot more that I can’t recommend or that are out of season and not made.
Main Round: My favorite sundress is EMS Sunguard Overhead Hoodie. It’s super soft and comfortable with a generous cut that wicks away sweat. I wear it in the city pool, and after a few minutes of sitting on the lounge chair, I’m dry enough to wear it in the store without dripping everywhere.
Heavy Duty: The heaviest sundress I own, and which I would wear on a mountain, is The North Face Summit Series Direct Sun Hoodie. This is a slightly thicker hoodie, although it is light and very breathable. Because it has a zipper, you can also get ventilation if you need it, so the weight is not an issue. When zipped up, the shirt also has a collar to protect your neck and jaw from the wind or sun. There is a finish used on the fabric of The North Face’s SPF-voted clothing, which varies from garment to garment.
More Information: “Day and night” clothes that seamlessly transition from the office to dinner and night are a popular item in women’s fashion. But sometimes you really want something that can pull two jobs. When I’m wearing a sundress in a bar or restaurant, I reach for it Blackstrap Brackish Sun Hoodiewhich looks more like a regular shirt than any other arrow in my quiver. I have it in shark tooth jory, a red and black model that looks like something I can wear even when I’m not trying to keep the sun off my back. I also like that it’s good to wipe the glasses while looking. I have written a lot of glasses and I am very careful about what I wipe them with.
Natural Nature: I tried the old book of Free Fly Bamboo Lightweight Performance Hoodie and true love. Bamboo is supersoft and naturally odorless, although less so than wool. This hoodie wears a little on the warm side and only offers SPF 20 protection, but it dries quickly, and the loose fit is great.
Hoodies and shorts are a little controversial in some areas, but I’m glad that our friends on GQ blessed the look–again and again. One great way to wear a sun hoodie is with swim trunks. You might think that swim trunks are for the pool or the beach, but I would agree that they have the same potential as men’s yoga pants, which you can wear anywhere in the summer (again, GQ agrees). Fortunately, I have been testing some of them as well.
Eye Catchers: These Minnow Boardies in the red and white lines called Gondola has Venetian art. They are on the short side (6-inch inseam) but are stretchy and soft. They are advertised as comfortable enough to wear all day, and I can attest that they are – into the pool, out of the pool, to happy hour. It’s a show-stopper, but you’ll need a black and neutral outfit to go with it.
