FIFA World Cup: Steve Clarke’s strong Scotland legacy but exit brings relief

For most of Saturday afternoon, the sky above Charlotte was a dirty shade of gray, rain was pouring down, the wind was blowing hard, and thunder and lightning could be seen and heard every minute.

If Steve Clark is watching from his hotel room, that’s a biblical scene he’s in.

News of the head coach’s departure broke within minutes of Scotland’s official exit from the World Cup. Unlike the weather, there was no warning.

The way out was familiar to the man; Low-key, no fuss, no interviews yet, no need in his mind to explain the idea beyond himself.

The length and detail in his valedictory statement suggests that this was in the works for a day or two, but there is no explanation as to why he made this decision.

And why suddenly? Why don’t you go home, take a break and not think about it? Snap judgments and impulsive reactions are not Clark’s traits, so why did he do this now?

The players didn’t know this was coming and neither did many of the Scottish FA board. A month ago, the same people announced to some fanfare that Clarke would be staying on for another four years.
