Riyad Mahrez left more fingerprints on Algerian football history after he scored both goals in his country’s 3-3 draw with Austria this Sunday morning in the third round of the 2026 World Cup group stage.
Mahrez became the first player in Algeria’s history to reach 11 goals in major tournaments with 9 goals at the Africa Cup of Nations and a brace at the World Cup.

The Desert Warriors captain also became the second Algerian player to score a brace in a World Cup game after Saleh Asad, who achieved the same feat against Chile at the 1982 World Cup, as Algeria won 3-2.

At the age of 35 years and 4 months, Mahrez became the second-oldest African player to score a brace at the World Cup, behind Cameroonian legend Roger Milla, who achieved the feat twice at the 1990 World Cup when he was 38, according to French network stats foot.
Algeria’s draw with Austria put the two teams into the round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where the Greens will play Switzerland and the European team face Spain.
