About a the second day In turn, the United States has launched attacks against Iran, citing the attack on a merchant ship as motivation.
Saturday’s attack is the latest sign that the ceasefire in the Middle East, established as part of the June 17 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), is about to end.
In a statement, the US Central Command (CENTCOM), which oversees military operations in the Middle East, explained that the latest threats came “under the direction of the Commander in Chief”.
“CENTCOM forces launched a strike today in direct response to Iran’s continued trade war,” the military headquarters wrote.
“U.S. warplanes targeted Iranian military surveillance equipment, communications systems, air defense facilities, drone storage facilities, and mining capabilities.”
Explosions were reported in southern Iran around the village of Tahrui, near the port of Sirik, which was also the site of US strikes on Friday.
Saturday’s strike against Iran followed a similar book on Friday. Early Saturday morning, around 4:30am US Eastern Time (8:00 GMT), the Panamanian-flagged Kiku was transiting the Strait of Hormuz when it was reportedly hit by an unidentified projectile.
No crew members were injured, and no leaks were reported from its cargo.
CENTCOM said the ship was carrying more than 2 million barrels of crude oil when it was hit by a “one-way plane”.
MarineTraffic.com reports that the tanker left the Al Shaheen oil terminal on Thursday and is due to dock in Fujairah, in the United Arab Emirates, on Sunday.
Similar events led to Friday’s US threats.
In that case, the Singapore-registered cruise ship Ever Lovely was hit by a drone as it passed through the Hormuz Strait on Thursday. No one was hurt, and the boat continued on its way.
However, US President Donald Trump condemned the drone strike on Friday as a “senseless violation” of the June 17 memorandum.
By that evening, the US and Iran had exchanged fire, with the US targeting areas around Sirik and Iran targeting US military forces in the Middle East.
CENTCOM reiterated its actions on Friday in announcing the latest strikes.
“Following yesterday’s US strikes in response to Iran’s attack on the M/V Ever Lovely, Iran was given an opportunity to honor the ceasefire agreement,” CENTCOM wrote.
Iran “decided not to do it”, it added, referring to the downing of the Kiku plane. CENTCOM also said that the flow of trade through the Strait of Hormuz, which is stuck in the ceasefire talks, will continue, with the help of the US military.
“The US military remains alert, alert and ready,” CENTCOM said in a statement.
