The players were surprised by the amount of rubble.
The Swedish team received a strong shock before the match against Japan at the end of the tournament of the sixth group of the 2026 World Cup.
According to the website New York Post The pitch at the Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas contained rubble, construction equipment and visibly damaged stands, making the team’s training session, which included stars such as Alexander Isak (Liverpool) and Victor Gukeris (Arsenal), appear to have been held in a demolition site rather than a football stadium.
Sweden head coach Stefan Pettersson said the team had been warned about the situation before arriving at the stadium, stressing that training was not affected, but noted that the players were surprised by the amount of rubble.
His statements were quoted by the Swedish “Aftonbladet” newspaper, where he said: “It was believed to have destroyed something and it appears to have fallen in the wrong direction. Fortunately, no one was hurt. Maybe they blew it up and then something didn’t happen.”

He added: “The players were a bit surprised when they arrived, not knowing what had happened here.”
On the other hand, officials from FC Dallas, which owns the stadium, explained in statements to The Athletic that the work was part of a planned and controlled demolition in an active construction area, and that the demolition process was carried out using a “pulled demolition” technique without the use of explosives before the start of Sweden’s training session. The team trained on time and finished the training normally.”
Sweden finished third in the group, one point behind Japan, who led the Netherlands with seven points, and all three qualified for the round of 32, where Isaac and Gukeris’ teammates will play France on Wednesday, next July 1.
