Mercedes driver George Russell controversially stole pole position from Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc in the final lap of the session at the Austrian Grand Prix.
The result came in late drama, beating Russell Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton in the Red Bull despite yellow flags for Max Verstappen’s crash at the corner.
Russell’s team-mate Kimi Antonelli, who was running just ahead of the Briton, overtook Verstappen’s incident but did not improve his time and finished fourth.
McLaren’s Lando Norris and Oscar Piastre were sixth and seventh behind Verstappen, who was fifth despite a crash.
Russell insisted it was cool enough for the Verstappen incident, and said there was a single yellow flag rather than the double yellows expected for such a situation.
“I had a big lift,” Russell said. “I went into the corner 0.5 seconds up and came out 0.25 seconds up. It was great to get that lap.
“I just spoke to Toto (Wolf, team principal) and he said everything is fine with the yellow flag. A big 100m uphill before the corner. So that’s good to hear.”
The later drama was caused by a major crash for Verstappen, who lost entry into the downhill right-hander at high speed and spun into the barrier on the gravel.
